One. There’s no denying that the power play stole the show last night. The Blue Jackets’ units capitalized twice on the two-man advantage, but started the power play pressure early with three shots on their first outing 2:47 into the game.
According to the Blue Jackets’ public relations department, it was just the fifth time in team history that they have scored twice on the 5-on-3 in a single game. However, Detroit powered right back, pulling the goaltender on the power play late in the third, scoring twice in a 46-second span to pull within a goal with minutes to play. But, the Blue Jackets held on to win 5-3 in dramatic fashion.
Two. Last night’s win that almost wasn’t took another team effort at home, as nine different players factored in on the Blue Jackets’ first three goals. It was also another milestone night for multiple Blue Jackets, as David Clarkson’s go-ahead goal in the second period (and his second goal of the season) put him at 200 career points, Cam Atkinson set career highs in assists (20) and points (42) in a single season, and Boone Jenner tied injured forward Brandon Saad for the team’s goal-scoring lead with 24. With Saad out of the lineup, contributions from all lines is a confidence boost for a team who has historically relied on a handful of players to get the job done on the scoresheet.
Three. Despite the Red Wings’ best efforts, the Blue Jackets have found a way to earn points in 20 of the 21 games they lead going into the final frame, posting an 18-1-2 record in that span. They took a 2-1 lead into the third period and held off the Red Wings’ late game surge. Though they had to fend off a comeback, it was a character win for the Blue Jackets to keep that statistic almost perfect and not shut down when the opposition battles back late in the game.
